Is the CIA using Saudi money to influence events in Indonesia?

On 19 August 2009, Indonesian police announced that a man believed to be from Saudi Arabia had been arrested on suspicion of smuggling money used to finance the July 2009 Jakarta hotel attacks.

The alleged ''money man'' behind the bombings is Ali Mohammad bin Abdillah, according to Indonesian media.

According to the newspaper Koran Tempo, Iwan Herdiansyah, 27, has also been arrested.

Iwan owns an internet cafe and spent several years in Saudi Arabia, before returning to Indonesia 13 months ago.

Neighbours reported that Iwan often had Arab-looking guests.

Saifuddin Jaelani, an Islamic cleric who allegedly recruited at least one of the bombers for the hotel attacks, spent four years in Yemen as a student.

J. Michael Springmann was head of the non-immigrant visa section at the "CIA-dominated" US consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 1987-88.

Springman said he learned that the CIA had a "program to bring people to the United States for terrorist training, people recruited by the CIA and its asset Usama bin Laden, and the idea was to get them trained and send them back to Afghanistan to fight the then Soviets."

(transcript of Springmann interview with CBC, 3 July 2002)

The CIA decided that bin Laden's men were too useful an ally to abandon after the Soviets left Afghanistan. (Al-Qaeda: A CIA protégé)

In 1991, in a meeting at Green's Hotel, Peshawar, Pakistan, Prince Turki bin Faisal (head of the Saudi intelligence service) and the "Arab Afghans" decided to continue their links.

The CIA used its Islamists in Bosnia during the break-up of Yugoslavia.

It would appear that the CIA likes Moslem countries to be Islamic, feudal and easy to exploit rather than secular, democratic and difficult to exploit.

Apparently the CIA used Islamists to topple Indonesia's president Suharto.

Lee Jay Walker has explained how the USA and CIA Created Sunni Islamic Terrorism (The Seoul Times) and worked with various Islamists.

Among the points made by Walker:

1. Egypt was secular under Nasser.

Egypt adopted Islamic laws under the pro-American, Anwar Sadat.

2. In Pakistan, America welcomed General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

Zia-ul-Haq made Pakistan more Islamic.

3. In Afghanistan, in Operation Cyclone, the CIA supported the Islamic Mujahideen.

4. The USA, along with Saudi Arabia and the UK, funded, trained and armed radical Islam.
