What links did the Mumbai attackers have to the Indian military and police?

Indonesia's , General Prabowo, a friend of the Pentagon, allegedly helped organise the the riots which toppled Suharto.

A. In May 1998, there were major riots in Jakarta which led to the retirement of President Suharto.

The military appeared to disappear from the streets while banks and shops were attacked.

Father Sandyawan Sumardi, interviewed people who had witnessed the alleged involvement of the (American-trained) military in organizing the riots and rapes.

A security officer alleged that Kopassus (special forces) officers had ordered the burning down of a bank; a taxi driver reported hearing a man in a military helicopter encouraging people on the ground to carry out looting;

shop-owners at a Plaza claimed that, before the riots, military officers tried to extract protection money; a teenager claimed he and thousands of others had been trained as protesters; a street child alleged that Kopassus officers ordered him and his friends to become rioters;

there was a report of soldiers being dressed up as students and then taking part in rioting; eyewitnesses spoke of muscular men with short haircuts arriving in military-style trucks and directing attacks on Chinese homes and businesses. (Alleged involvement of the military in planning the riots )

In Mumbai, in November 2008, something similar seems to have happened.

B. Rana Ayyub, at Tehelka Magazine, ( Vol 5, Issue 49, 13 December 2008, tells us about the Mumbai Attacks in some detail (Read >>)

From this we learn:

1. According to the surviving gunman called Kasav, the gunmen sailed past the coast guards and past the Naval lines of defence.

Eyewitness Ajay Mistry, saw six men get off at the fishermen’s coast in the Cuffe Parade area near Sassoon dock in Mumbai (Bombay) at around 8.30 PM on Wednesday 26 November 2008.

The men were dressed smartly in navy blue and black. They appeared to be in their early twenties, like college kids.

A teenager asked the men what they were doing there, to which one of them replied that they were college students and had just come back from a boat ride.

(Some reports say that some of the gunmen came 15 days earlier and ALL checked into Nariman House.

“I saw 6 to 7 boats coming in on Wednesday evening and about ten people unloaded many bags from these boats and then gradually took them into the building, Nariman House’, Vitthal Tandel, a fisherman in the area said. - THE NARIMAN HOUSE STORY)

CST Station

2. Reportedly, on 26 November 2008, an hour after coming ashore, two gunmen with AK 47s, reportedly Kasav and Abu Ismail, walked into the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).

They fired randomly at the passengers on the platform.

(There are some doubts about whether or not Kasav and Ismail were involved.

The "foreign looking, fair skinned" men, as Mr Pappu Mishra remembers them, simply carried on killing.

According to the BBC: "2120 - Gunfire starts at the Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station when at least two gunmen storm the crowded terminal, firing indiscriminately." (BBC NEWS South Asia Timeline: Mumbai under attack)

Anand Shelgaonkar, a cleaner at the station, saw one of the two terrorists throw a hand grenade.

The railway police were ineffective.

Security at stations was supposed to have been improved after the train blasts in Mumbai in 2006 killed 187 people.

3. Having left the station, the two people reported to be Kasav and Ismail entered Cama Hospital.

According to the BBC: "2120-2200: Gunmen raid the Cama and Albless Hospital, shooting indiscriminately. One attacker is captured here." - (BBC NEWS South Asia Timeline: Mumbai under attack)

India's Crisis Management Group (CMG) is supposed to get to work within minutes of an attack.

But it was nowhere in evidence.

Karkare knew too much

4. One of the terrorists was told by phone that a police jeep was making its way to the hospital.

Apparently this vehicle contained Anti-Terror Squad chief Hemant Karkare, and apparently the vehicle was ambushed.

Karkare had been investigating the involvement of the Indian military and Hindu politicians in organising terrorism.

How did the gunmen get SIM cards which got activated so quickly?

There are conflicting reports of the SIMs having come from Vienna and New York and another of them being from Delhi and West Bengal.

The gunmen shot dead Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and ACP Ashok Kamte in their vehicle.

Mumbai’s top three anti terrorist squad officers died before they had a chance to pick up their guns.

Who phoned the gunmen to tell them Karkare was on his way?

Reportedly this is Kasav

5. Arun Jadhav, a constable who survived, is an eyewitness.

According to Jadhav, the two gunmen took control of the vehicle and drove towards the Metro theatre junction, while firing at the people on the road.

The police eventually managed to shoot dead the person reported to be Ismail and wound and arrest the person reported to be Kasav.

(“The Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told Associated Press that two British-born Pakistanis were among the eight gunmen arrested by Indian authorities.” - Four Mumbai terrorists ‘had links with Britain’)

6. At roughly the same time as the CST rail station shootout, two other gunmen were shooting people at the Leopold Café.

Mehmood Patel, who was standing outside the Leopold, remembers the two terrorists walking out of the Café and taking the lane for the nearby Taj Hotel.

("Gaffar Abdul Amir, an Iraqi tourist from Baghdad, says he saw at least two men who started the firing outside the Leopold Cafe.

"He was returning to his hotel from the seaside with a friend when he saw two men carrying bags and brandishing AK-47s walking in front of them, shooting.

"'They did not look Indian, they looked foreign. One of them, I thought, had blonde hair. The other had a punkish hairstyle. They were neatly dressed,' says Mr Amir.

Is the Indian government in bed with Israel?

7. Where were the police?

Had somebody informed the Home Ministry, the National Security Advisor, the Prime Minister?

8. Vasant Prabhu, a Press photographer saw one of the terrorists entering the Taj.

He followed and found Nagre Patil, a district commissioner of police (DCP), entering the hotel with a bodyguard and two security men.

According to Prabhu, “When we reached the first floor the terrorists had already started firing. We somehow managed to reach the third floor. The DCP, who had just a service revolver, was cautious and tried to peep over the wall from the third to the second floor.

"A gunman saw us, shouted 'Bastards' and opened fire.

"We ducked and fell on the floor and started creeping towards the staircase.’"

9. Also at about 9.30pm, two gunmen, one slightly plump, threw a hand grenade at the Bharat Petroleum gas station at the Colaba Causeway next to the Israeli-owned Chabad House, better known as Nariman House.

10. The commandos did not arrive at Nariman House until the next day.

11. We are told to believe that for three days, four men held control of the Taj hotel.

12. Reportedly two gunmen were able to take over the Oberoi.
