Jersey - more human bones found

On 21 May 2008, Lenny Harper, the detective in charge of the child abuse investigation in Jersey, said a total of 30 bone fragments and seven children’s teeth have now been found at Haut de la Garenne.

He suggested that a body or bodies may have been cremated in a fire place.

Mr Harper said he expected up to 70 suspects to be arrested.

He stated that twelve more bone fragments had been found in the last 24 hours and another human tooth.

Tests on eleven bone fragments have confirmed that all of them are human.

They include a piece of child's tibia and several fragments up to one and a half inches in length.

Mr Harper said many of the bones had been buried in ash and had been found near an old fireplace. This suggested that bodies may have been cremated there.

He said that all but one of the milk teeth which had been discovered still had roots attached. They could not have fallen out naturally. None of them showed any sign of decay or damage.

Victims of abuse dating back to the 1960's have told police they were tortured in cellars.

A set of shackles, a concrete bath and several blood stained items were found by police.
