Jersey - Channel TV names top people caught up in the child abuse scandal

Clockwise from top left: Phil Mourant, John Rodhouse, John Le Marquand, Charles Smith, Reg Jeune, Jim Thompson

Channel Television and various newspapers have named a number of people who should perhaps have known, or might have known, what was going on.

Reg Jeune, former Finance Minister, was president of the education committee from 1971 to 1984, when police claim abuse was at its worst.

Mario Lundy, Jersey's present education director, worked at Haut de la Garenne for two years.

John Le Marquand, was education committee president in the early 1960s.

Herbert Wimberley, is a former director of education.

Patricia Thornton, is a former children’s officer.

Colin Tilbrook, is a former headmaster at Haut de la Garenne.

Phil G Mourant, is a former education committee president.

Charles Smith, is a former children’s officer.

John Rodhouse, is a former director of education.

Terry Streetle, was a children's officer in 1986.

Jim Thomson, now dead, became superintendent at the home in 1979.

Carl Denning was quoted by The Sun as saying a boy died mysteriously in the Haut de la Garenne sick bay used by staff and their pedophile friends.

Mr Denning, 49, said he suffered sexual abuse at the Haut de la Garenne home in St Martin, Jersey, from the age of five until he was eight.

He said two of his friends who suffered sexual abuse killed themselves at the home, but staff at the home did nothing. (Jersey abuse 'led victims to suicide' The Australian)

One alleged victim of the Jersey home, Steve, has told of how he received a sinister warning from a former childcare worker urging him not to "dredge up" the past.

Steve said: "This person had suggested I have a good life, a very good job, a family, I've left the island, it's all in the past and that dredging it up won't help matters – it will cause more problems.

"I said I'd already spoken to the police about it and she said 'well I know that' but if they speak to you again, certainly about the remains it would be in my best interests to say: 'I've told you all I know and keep a low profile'."

Another individual has claimed he was molested for three years from aged six by an officer in the Jersey Sea Cadets. (Further abuse claims in Jersey care home)

The bin Laden links to the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey)

Jersey is one of the Channel islands.

According to Inter Press Service (5 April 2007)

BCCI was the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, which the CIA used "to run guns to Hussein, finance Osama bin Laden, move money in the illegal Iran-Contra operation and carry out other 'agency' black ops." Khalid bin Mahfouz was on the board of BCCI.

In 1992, Khalid bin Mahfouz established the Muwafaq ('Blessed Relief') Foundation in the Channel Islands.

The U.S. Treasury Department called it “an al Qaeda front that receives funding from wealthy Saudi businessmen.”

Reportedly, millions of dollars were transferred to Osama bin Laden through Blessed Relief.

An audit of the Defendant National Commercial Bank of Saudi Arabia in the mid-1990s, which was then run by Khalid bin Salim bin Mahfouz, "reveals the transfer of $3 million for Osama bin Laden that traveled from the accounts of wealthy Saudi businessmen to Blessed Relief." (Yassin Al-Kadi - 9/11 Encyclopedia)

The bin Laden family and the Bush family have had investments in the Carlyle Group. (

Carlyle holds its stake in defence firm QinetiQ through various special-purpose vehicles registered in the Channel Islands. (,3604,1579753,00.htm)

How America is making you poorer.

The Iraq war hurts everyone.

The Iraq war has cost America trillions of dollars and has cost the rest of the world additional trillions of dollars.

A Guardian article on the cost of the Iraq War (Aida Edemariam talks to author Joseph Stiglitz about the true cost ...) makes the following points:

Why has the rest of the world lost trillions?

1. The rising price of oil has meant that the cost to oil-importing industrial countries in Europe and the Far East is now about $1.1 trillion.

The rising price of oil is devastating Third World countries.

A study by the International Energy Agency that looked at a sample of 13 African countries found that rising oil prices have "had the effect of lowering the average income by 3% - more than offsetting all of the increase in foreign aid that they had received in recent years, and setting the stage for another crisis in these countries".

3. The weak economic position of the USA, resulting from the Iraq war, is hurting the global economy.

4. The Iraqi economy has been smashed.

5. There are tens of thousands of dead. (Probably over a million dead as a result of US policies in Iraq)

6. There is a high cost, to neighbouring countries, of absorbing thousands of refugees.

7. There is the cost of the coalition military. Before the war, Britain's Gordon Brown set aside £1bn; by late 2007, direct operating costs in Iraq and Afghanistan were £7bn and rising.

Ben Griffin - Former SAS Trooper Banned speech

Slipshod, lazy and, worst of all, drunken and promiscuous.

Lord Mancroft, speaking in the British parliament, described conditions in the British hospital in which he stayed (NHS: Patient Care - 28 Feb 2008) :

"The wards were filthy.

"Underneath the bed next to me was a piece of dirty cotton wool, and there it remained for seven days; the ward was never cleaned.

"It was a gastroenterology ward, with lots of people with very unpleasant infectious diseases. The ward, the tables, the beds and the bathrooms were not cleaned.

"I was extremely infectious at that time and no precautions were taken with me at all. The staff were furious when my wife wanted my bed cleaned when it clearly needed cleaning. I was just lying there, a pathetic person. It was appalling.

"The nurses, who probably are the most important people in this complex area, were what I would describe as an accurate reflection of many young women in Britain today.

"What do I mean by that? I shall now break your Lordships' rules and read the next bit, because I thought very hard before I wrote it.

"The nurses who looked after me—not all of them; we should never generalise and there were one or two wonderful ones—were mostly grubby, with dirty fingernails and hair.

"They were slipshod, lazy and, worst of all, drunken and promiscuous.

"How do I know that? If you are a patient, lying in a bed and being nursed from either side, the nurses talk across you as if you are not there. I know exactly what they got up to the night before. I know how much they drank and what they were planning to do the next night, and it was pretty horrifying.

"My bed was next door to the nurses' station, so you could see how the whole place was being run. Actually, you could not: I have seen lots of things being run, but after a week, I could not tell you who was in charge. I had absolutely no idea who was telling who to do what. My view is that nobody was telling anybody.

"The man opposite me was dying. I imagine he died two or three days after I left. I do not know what he was dying of because he was not doing a lot of talking. But I do know that he virtually died alone. The nurses thought that he was a nuisance. They changed his bottle, gave him his pills, occasionally fed him and propped him up. But basically this man died alone in a British hospital in the 21st century, and I had to watch him do it, which was pretty unpleasant..."

Some sensible countries have sovereign wealth funds.

That means nest eggs resulting from oil revenues.

Countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar have very large sovereign wealth funds.

These funds are being used to buy Britain's Chelsea Barracks, iron mines in Mauritania, an urban-development scheme in southern Malaysia, an oil refinery in Bangladesh, resorts in Morocco, upmarket housing projects in Cairo, Damascus, Hyderabad, Istanbul and Karachi, a resort city on Egypt's Red Sea coast, a fancy suburb for Tunis, office towers in Cairo and Khartoum, resorts in Syria, Morocco and the Seychelles... (Cash is going to the poor, too )

1. Scotland could have had one of the world's biggest sovereign wealth funds, as a result of North Sea oil.

2. This is according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (Sovereign wealth funds likened to Gazprom as Brussels calls for rules ) which refers to a £450 billion nest egg.

This nest egg is bigger than those of Kuwait, Russia and Qatar combined.

Norway has a £322 billion fund.

3. The study shows that Scotland's oil wealth was used to cut UK taxes and boost UK spending.

In other words, Scotland's oil wealth helped Thatcher and Blair to (A) cut the taxes of the rich folks living in the South East of England and (B) spend more on things like the Dome and the Iraq War.

4. Parts of Scotland suffer from Third World poverty and are in desperate need of investment.

Male life expectancy in Dalmarnock, Calton, Kinning Park and Townhead is below 60.

(Poverty and inequality, the increasing socio-economic divide in ... / In Iraq, life expectancy is 67. Minutes from Glasgow city centre ...)

5. The Herald, 2 November 2007, has demonstrated that Scotland pays its own way, unlike many parts of England. (Scotching the myth // Why the figures being peddled by Scotland’s critics just don’t add up)

Public Spending in Scotland - £9631 per head

Public Spending in London - £9748 per head

The tax take from Scotland - £49 billion

Total public spending in Scotland - £49 billion

Scotland brings in £9593 per head in tax - more than anywhere in the UK outside London.

London's Crossrail project is to cost £16 billion - seven and a half times the annual Scottish transport budget.

The 2012 Olympics is to be in London.

Tax per head and public spending per head in thousands of pounds (figures rounded down):

North East of England

Tax 6

Spending 10

North West of England

6. Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond says that if Scotland is given direct control of North Sea oil and gas it could be the third-wealthiest country in Europe and the sixth-richest in the world. ‘Challenge to the party is to inspire a generation’

Salmond has pointed out that England, particularly London, benefits heavily from spending on UK departments such as defence and the Treasury. Let us control North Sea oil - Salmond

7. At least half of Scotland's oil wealth remains in the North Sea.

There is still time for Scotland to be rich.

The US in the Philippines; massacre of civilians

1. Gary Leupp, professor of history, wrote:

"The Philippines was a US colony from 1898 to 1946.

"One-tenth of the Filipino population was wiped out in the first US exercise in counter-insurgency in Asia.

"The US backed a series of vicious regimes after the Philippines' (alleged) independence, most notably that of Ferdinand Marcos." (Gary Leupp: Why This War Is Wrong)

2. The book 'Development Debacle: The World Bank in the Philippines', by University of the Philippines professor Walden Bello, describes how:

"the World Bank, the CIA and other US agencies have systematically plundered the domestic economy of the Philippines for transnational corporate interests, privatization, and deregulation -

"and how the 'Asian market crisis' of the late 1990s was the direct result of such programs.'"

3. Herbert Docena, at Asia Times, 28 February 2008, has written about the growing US military presence in the Philippines:

"The United States has been deploying a growing number of its troops, ships and equipment all over the Philippines ostensibly for training exercises, humanitarian and engineering projects, and other missions. In 2006 alone, up to 37 military exercises were scheduled - up from around 24 in the preceding years. As many as 6,000 US troops are involved, depending on the exercise...

"Along with troops, an increasing number of ships have also been entering the country's territorial waters and docking at various ports with growing frequency...

"The US has also been constructing an increasing number of structures and facilities that could be useful for the US military when the contingency arises - while at the same time allowing it to buy political support from the national and local governments...

"In November 2002, the US and Philippine governments signed the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement (MLSA), which researchers with the US Congressional Research Service describe as 'allowing the United States to use the Philippines as a supply base for military operations throughout the region'...

"Since 2002, a unit now called the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTFP) has been deployed to the southern Philippines ... for the last six years...

"Most recently, US troops have been accused of joining Filipino soldiers when they perpetrated what was described as a massacre of innocent civilians in Sulu.

"In terms of profile and mission, the JSOTF-P is similar to the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa (CJTF-Horn of Africa) - which was established in Djibouti in eastern Africa in 2003, also composed mostly of Special Forces, and which has been described as the 'model for future US military operations'...

"The US military presence in the Philippines appears to be part of the US drive toward global military dominance in general, and, in particular, of the emerging US strategy towards China...

"Indonesia and Malaysia, on the other hand, have not only openly castigated US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, they have also rejected US demands to station in and operate from their countries.

"Even Thailand, which is a close US ally, has actually rejected US overtures to be allowed to station ships in or to deploy troops to its territory.

"Regardless of their attitudes toward the United States, most countries in the region simply do not see China as a threat and have therefore refused to go along any strategy that could antagonize it."

Turkey and Israel against the Arab world

"The US government has committed yet another foreign policy blunder. This it has done by tacitly consenting to the ongoing Turkish incursions into northern Iraq...

"The chances are Iran will forge closer ties to the Arab world, via Iran-friendly Baghdad, against Israel-backed Turkish influence and power projection - which many Israelis see as a potential counterweight to Iran...

"Turkey is likely not fated to any better prospect in northern Iraq than Israel has managed in southern Lebanon." - A wild Turkey chase?

Philip Martin Bailhache and Haut de la Garenne in Jersey

"Media reporting of the breaking child abuse and murder scandal in Jersey have conspicuously omitted to mention that Governor of the Jersey Home for Boys (Haut de la Garenne) during the 1970s and 1980s was the island's current Bailiff, Sir Philip Martin Bailhache KGB.

"Local residents have leaked this onto Channel Islands forums, and threads are being closed as quick as you can find them by moderators mindful of libel laws and the fact that very little is known for sure about this horrific story to date." - UK Indymedia - State-protected paedophile ring in Jersey?

"Figures connected to Jersey’s establishment are among those accused of abusing children in the Haut de la Garenne care home, the island’s police chief has revealed.

"Chief Officer Graham Power said that because of the size of the island - which has a population of around 90,000 - it was “inevitable” that those in positions of power were implicated.

"As well as people at the home, he said, there were allegations about outsiders who abused children living there." - 'Possible suspects had positions of authority'

Hopefully, Jersey is not like Belgium.

Reporetdly, Michel Nihoul organised orgies in a Belgian chateau.

These orgies were allegedly attended by a former European commissioner, judges, senior politicians, lawyers and policemen.

A book was written called 'The X-files: What Belgium Was Not Supposed to Know About the Dutroux Affair.'

Regina Louf testified to the authorities about orgies at which she allegedly saw children tortured and murdered.

The allegation in the X-files is that, at Black masses, attended by members of Belgium's elite, children were sacrificed.

At the village of Forchies-la-Marche, the police investigated an institute of Black Magic. They dug up human skulls.

The International Herald Tribune did a famous piece about all this. They quoted a judge called Guy Poncelet as saying the X-files book was convincing. Belgium Pedophilia Scandal /Did Authorities Cover Up Its Scope ...

Guy Poncelet's son, a police officer, was mysteriously shot dead.

This son had been investigating a case involving Dutroux.

Judge Connerotte was the judge who caught Dutroux.

The authorities removed Connerotte from the case.

De Baets was the official in charge of investigating the X-files. The authorities removed him from the case.

In 1991, Belgium's former deputy prime minister, Andre Cools, announced that he was about to make some revelations about the mafia and their links to some of the most important people in Liege.

Cools was shot dead before he could speak out.

After Dutroux's arrest in 1996, arrests were made in the Cool's case. One of those arrested was Alain Van der Biest, a Socialist Minister, alleged to have close links with the mafia gangs of Liege.
Belgian TV came up with an anonymous witness who claimed that leading Socialist politician, Guy Mathot, had ordered Cools to be killed.

In 1994 Mathot was charged with corruption over kickbacks paid to Belgium's Socialist parties.

Willy Claes was NATO Secretary General and a Belgian. He was caught up in the Mathot kickbacks affair and was forced to resign.

Melchior Wathelet was the judge who released Dutroux from prison in 1991. Wathelet was Belgium's judge at the European Court of Justice.

Wathelet was Belgium's Justice Minister at the time when Cools was shot dead. Cools' son called for Wathelet and other top judges to be removed from office.

In 1996 there were suggestions that the gangs involved in the Cools' killing had been involved with Dutroux.

1,300 children disappeared in the Brussels region between 1991 and 1996. According to government official Mr De Baets, what happened after several of these disappearances was that Marc Dutroux paid large sums of money into various bank accounts.

The BBC referred to other mysterious deaths:

Satanic child abuse and the police

2. Australia: In the late 1980s, a number of children at a daycare centre in the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, began disclosing experiences of organised and ritualistic sexual abuse to their parents and the police.[3] Their disclosures included instances in which they were taken in a car from the creche to a nearby house, undressed by adults and sexually assaulted, video-taped and filmed while naked, and urinated and defecated upon by adults. The children disclosed that some of the abusers wore police uniforms....[4] List of satanic ritual abuse allegations

In 2002, Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon refers complaints about the mishandling of the case by police to the Victorian Ombudsman. An officer from the Ethical Standards Department was stood down a year later from the Ombudsman's investigation for "incompetence" after failing to pass on information from two key witnesses, and claiming that he never spoke to them when phone records proved that he had. One of the witnesses referred to a tape of child pornography showing men in police uniforms sexually assaulting children from the daycare centre, however, this lead was never followed up by the police.

Another witness identified the house in which the children had been assaulted as being owned by a police officer.[7]

The principal of a private college on the Mornington Peninsula repeatedly told the Department of Human Services that a 12-year-old boy disclosed ongoing sexual abuse by an organised group of men wearing police uniforms. According to the principal, all records of the child's complaint vanished.

A Victoria Police spokesman said he was not aware that files had disappeared. The police declined to press charges, saying the boy had been "too well groomed" by the pedophiles and probably would not testify in court.[8]

3. In the early 1990s, Superior Universal Alignment, an Argentinian-based international cult, was implicated in the ritualistic murders of several children. One of the leaders of the group, Osvaldo Marcineiro, confessed to murdering a number of young children in Satanic rituals, in which the children were tortured, murdered and their body parts cannibalised. A number of prominent citizens were arrested in relation to the murders.

People sentenced in relation to the murders included a former police officer. The charges related to the murders of three young children and the attempted murder of another, however, victim's families say that there were at least nineteen other murdered children. The cult is based in Argentina and has branches in Holland [21]. List of satanic ritual abuse allegations

4. In 2006, a jury at Dublin Country Coroner's court unanimously ruled that the infant found stabbed to death over three decades ago belonged to Cynthia Owen.

During the trial, Owen detailed her childhood history of satanic ritual abuse orchestrated by her parents involving at least nine other men.[22]

Following the findings of the Coroner's Court, Owen raised questions regarding the failure of the police to investigate the murder. [23] List of satanic ritual abuse allegations

5. In 2003 allegations by three children in Lewis, Scotland resulted in the arrest of eight people for sexual abuse occurring between 1990 and 2000. A 2005 investigation by the Social Work Inspection Agency found extensive evidence of sexual, physical and emotional abuse and neglect.[41] Police investigation resulted in allegations of an island-wide "Satanic paedophile ring",[41][42] though charges were dropped nine months later following an inconclusive investigation.[42][41] List of satanic ritual abuse allegations

6. Lt Col Michael Aquino, of the US military, has been accused of being involved in child abuse in the USA: "One child positively identified Aquino and his wife, Lilith (known to the kids as 'Mikey' and 'Shamby'), and was also able to identify the Aquinos’ private home and to describe with considerable accuracy the distinctively satanic interior décor of the house.

"The young witness claimed to have been photographed at the Aquinos’ home. On August 14, 1987, a search warrant was served on the house. Confiscated in the raid were numerous videotapes, photographs, photo albums, photographic negatives, cassette tapes, and name and address books.

"Also observed was what appeared to be a soundproof room.

"Neither of the Aquinos was charged with any crimes...

"The U.S. Attorney in San Francisco handling the case was Joseph Russoniello. Russoniello would later be identified by reporter Gary Webb (of the San Jose Mercury News) as a player in the Contra cocaine smuggling operation led by Lt. Col. Oliver North and company, just as witnesses would later identify Lt. Col. Michael Aquino as an operative in the very same sordid affair."

Fort Bragg: "Aquino was also identified by children in Santa Rosa and Fort Bragg, California. In the Fort Bragg case, 'allegations of ritual abuse erupted...

"Cases erupted at some of the country’s most esteemed military bases, including Fort Dix, Fort Leavenworth, Fort Jackson, and West Point. Many of those making the accusations were career military officers who had devoted their lives to unquestioned allegiance to the U.S. armed forces. Many would resign their posts in outraged protest...

"The Times Herald Record reported in June 1991, the 'incidents [at the West Point Child Development Center] unfolded against a backdrop of satanic acts...

West Point: "The Mercury News reported, 'by the end of the year, 50 children had been interviewed by investigators.

"Children at West Point told stories that would become horrifyingly familiar. They said they had been ritually abused. They said they had had excrement smeared on their bodies and been forced to eat feces and drink urine. They said they were taken away from the day care center and photographed.'

"Despite abundant medical and psychological evidence and literally dozens of child witnesses, and despite '950 interviews by 60 FBI agents assigned to the investigation,' the investigation, 'led by former U.S. Attorney [and future mayor] Rudolph Giuliani' produced 'no federal grand jury indictments,' according to the Herald Record..." -

7. Marc Dutroux was part of a mafia-style operation which kidnapped and killed children and which organised orgies for top people including politicians and police.

In 1989, Dutroux was sentenced to 13 years in jail for kidnapping and raping young girls. He was out within 3 years.

Dutroux claimed that two police officers had helped Lelievre and himself to kidnap Marchal, and Lambreks who were later raped and murdered.

The common knowledge that police officers and high ranking officals also attended Nihouls orgies at the chateau must give further fuel to the fire that the accused was not acting alone. - aangirfan: Marc Dutroux

It looks like Turkey is being persuaded to join an attack on Iran.

Cem has posted the following:

Will Turkey be complicit in another war against another neighbour?

(Will Turkey be complicit in another war against another neighbour ...)

by Cem Ertür, CASMII, 24 February 2008

Despite the the latest positive report of the IAEA on Iran' nuclear programme [1], efforts to launch a war against Iran are gathering pace [2].

Given the unpopularity of such a war, the big powers are keeping very quiet about it whilst using highly sophisticated methods to psychologically prepare their citizens.

At the same time, all we hear about Turkey in the Western European and North American mainstream media is the accession talks with the European Union, the conflict between the religious AKP government and the country’s secular establishment (including the military) and the cross-border operations into Northern Iraq.

Is there no connection between Turkey and this new threat of war?

How does psychological preparation work in the case of Turkey?

What pressure are the leading NATO countries putting on the Turkish Government?

How is the extra-parliamentary opposition reacting to the prospective next stage of the ‘Global War on Terror’?

In 2006, researcher Michel Chossudovsky commented on an alliance that was described earlier by the Middle East Report as ‘probably the greatest strategic move in the Clinton post-Cold War years’:

Already during the Clinton Administration, a triangular military alliance between the US, Israel and Turkey had unfolded.

This ‘triple alliance’ is … coupled with a strong bilateral military relationship between Tel Aviv and Ankara. Amply documented, Israel and Turkey are partners in the planned US aerial attacks on Iran, which have been in an advanced state of readiness since mid-2005. [3]

The recent state visits by the Israeli President Shimon Peres and the Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak to Turkey were the clearest indication yet of this alliance against Iran.

On board his plane on the way to Ankara on February 11, Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said that he would present Turkey's top leadership with Israeli intelligence reports on Iran’s nuclear plans:

It is important to … try to convince [Turkey] of the facts. [4]

In the wake of this visit, the Israeli defence officials have given the following statements:

Turkey was interested in acquiring a missile defense system in the face of Iran's continued race toward nuclear power. [5]

All of the countries in the region understand that the Iranian threat is not just against Israel. Iran's long-range missiles can reach well beyond Israel. [6]

However, Barak had a different attitude towards Syria:

Turkey has a natural role in certain mediation and has found a proper way to dialogue with Syria. There is respect for Turkey in both Syria and Lebanon. This respect should be used for blocking the flow of weapons from Iran to Hezbollah through Syria. We respect Syria but we also expect Syria to have respect for Israel's identity as well. You cannot impose peace. … It takes two willing parties. [7]

This statement should be seen as part of the divide-and-rule strategy of isolating Iran.

As the leading NATO allies will not be able to attack Iran and Syria simultaneously, they need to break the strategic alliance between these two countries and go one step at a time.

Barak’s statements echoed those by the Israeli President Shimon Peres during his visit to Ankara in November last year.

Writer Kemal Camurcu analyses Peres’ speech at the Turkish Parliament to a committee with majority from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliamentarians:

Peres was applauded by the AKP parliamentarians for saying ‘You don't realize and you don't understand, your real enemy is your next-door neighbour Iran!’.

The purpose of his visit was to declare to the whole region that ‘There are the two trends in the region: Iran as a sponsor of terrorism and pro-peace Turkey’. He declared it and received applause! Given his interviews, his speech in the Turkish Parliament and the news items on ‘intelligence-sharing’, it is plausible to argue that the sole purpose of Peres' visit was to explain to Ankara the ‘Iranian threat’. [8]

These statements were all the more significant considering that they were made at a time when the US, Israel and their European allies were desperate to get support for the Annapolis Conference in the face of widespread opposition to this initiative across the Arab World. However, this went largely unreported in the mainstream Turkish media. The Deputy Head of the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi) Mr Sevket Kazan explains the real agenda behind this conference:

This war against Iran will be launched by the US and Israel with the support of Turkey.

Once the power of these two has proved insufficient, the UK, France and finally NATO forces –including Turkey- will also get involved. [9]

At a joint press conference with his visiting Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak, Defence Minister Vecdi Gonul said:

We thank Israel for its support to Turkey in the defense industry. We thank Mr. Barak for sending equipment and devices that Turkey uses in the south-east and in cross border operations [against the PKK]. [10]

In the run-up to this visit, alternative website Fikritakip made the following remark:

For some time it has been striking that every evening Show TV has introduced at great length the ‘high-tech’ arms and defence systems provided by Israel to Turkey in the latter’s struggle with the PKK...

This shows that the nationalist circles, which are thought to be anti-Israel, are in reality grateful to this country for its support against the PKK. [11]

The Turkish media reporting on the US support against the PKK was along the same lines and proved to be instrumental in dissipating the anti-American feelings across the Turkish population. In fact, until the US support began late last year, they were being accused by the Turkish mainstream media and politicians of not only turning a blind eye to the PKK’s use of violence, but also of providing covert support to it.

In a newspaper article, former parliamentarian Mehmet Bekaroglu asks the following question:

Isn’t it strange that the US declares the PKK ‘a common enemy of Turkey, the United States and Iraq’, while also encouraging, or even arming, training and providing intelligence support to the same PKK under the name of PJAK, against another country in the region, namely Iran? [12]

Actually, this is not all that strange considering the divide-and-rule strategy of the US, the EU and Israel across the Muslim world based on the exploitation of all the existing hostilities and divisions.

Until recently, they were simultaneously supporting the Turkish Armed Forces, the PKK and its sister organisation PJAK as well as the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq.

According to the Firat News Agency, the reason behind the US support is:

An agreement made between the US, Turkey and the Federal Administration of South Kurdistan for the construction in South and North Kurdistan [i.e. Northern Iraq and South-eastern Turkey respectively] of two strategic US military bases targeting Iran. [13]

The base in Turkey is reportedly located in the Yuksekova district at the Iranian border.

Needless to say, in the event of a war on Iran, the US and its leading NATO allies will be using all the bases on the Turkish territory at their disposal, including the secrets ones.

It is important to bear in mind that the notorious US military base in Incirlik (Southern Turkey), which has played a crucial role in all the Anglo-American invasions in the Middle East in the post-cold war period, contains 90 nuclear warheads.

In retrospect, the rejection of the March 2003 parliamentary motion to allow US troops to use Turkish soil as a staging ground for an invasion of Iraq didn’t seem to have much of an impact as the US army clandestinely went ahead with its plans anyway.

Turkey is playing a regional leadership role in the Middle East. Turkey's common borders with Iraq, Iran, and Syria provide an opportunity to advance peace and stability, fight proliferation of nuclear weapons, and defeat terrorists in a region that is now the epicenter of U.S. foreign policy. [14]

(US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Richard Burns, in the wake of his visit to Turkey in September 2007)

The Head of the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency General Henry Obering recently said:

The United States hopes to put a third major antimissile component in Europe along with those under negotiation with Poland and the Czech Republic to counter Iran… The previously unannounced third leg in Europe … would be placed closer to Iran, which is speeding efforts to build ballistic missiles capable of delivering deadly weapons beyond the Middle East…
The powerful, ‘forward based’ radar system would go in south-eastern Europe, possibly in Turkey, the Caucasus or the Caspian Sea region. [15]

Actually, ‘the previously unannounced third leg in Europe’ was announced back in March 2007 by the US Ambassador to NATO, Victoria Nuland:

The defence system against long-range missiles of Iran and other countries … will cover most of the territories of the NATO members and there will be no need for a second system within NATO. But the threat of Iran’s short- and medium-range missiles is still present for countries like Turkey. In order to counter that, as USA and Turkey, we are working bilaterally as well as within the NATO framework. [16]

Like Iran’s main trading partners in the EU, Turkey has been under heavy and ongoing US pressure to cut its economic ties with Iran:

Turkey's recent conclusion of a memorandum on energy co-operation with Iran is troubling. Now is not the time for business as usual with Iran. We urge all of our friends and allies, including Turkey, to not reward Iran by investing in its oil and gas sector, while Iran continues to defy the United Nations Security Council by continuing its nuclear research for a weapons capability. [14]

In January this year, Stuart Levey, US Treasury's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, urged Turkey to be vigilant in its financial dealings with Iran:

It is essential to share information to discuss risks ... and vigilance that is required in order to make sure that Turkey's financial institutions are not abused by Iranian financial institutions and Iranian state-owned banks. [17]

The former German Foreign Affairs Minister Joschka Fischer made the following statement in October 2006:

Turkey should be a security pillar for the European community, and the efforts to derail that relationship are impossibly short-sighted. [18]

Researcher Darius Mahdi Nazemroaya argues that:

[The German] Chancellor Angela Merkel intensified her calls for the inclusion of Turkey within the framework of the E.U. through a ‘special relationship,’ but not as part of the actual European bloc. This also foreshadowed what Nicolas Sarkozy would later propose to the Turks. [18]

Columnist Umur Talu explains what this ‘special relationship’ entails:

French Prime Minister Sarkozy, who ‘doesn't want Turkey in the EU’, but clings to the USA and Israel and ‘wants an attack on Iran’ will adopt a ‘carrots and sticks policy’ towards Turkey. In other words, he will use the EU as bait for our territory, airspace and bases. [19]

In fact, that Turkey became a NATO member in 1952, yet has been denied E.U. membership since the creation of the European Union is quite telling. The US and the leading EU countries have a common policy towards Turkey: They are using the PKK, accession to the EU, resolutions on the 1915 Armenian Genocide as trump cards to bring Turkish public opinion into line with the US and EU foreign policy goals.

The following statement by US Democrat Brad Sherman is rather odd given the joint US-Turkish complicity in the ongoing Afghan and Iraq genocides as well as the prospect of another genocide in Iran:

For if we hope to stop future genocides we need to admit to those horrific acts of the past. [20]

After all, the world’s leading powers are quite adept at using past genocides/mass murders as an excuse to carry out their own genocides. [21]

Daniele Ganser, the author of ‘NATO's Secret Armies: Operation GLADIO and Terrorism in Western Europe’ (I) , explains an ongoing pattern across the NATO member countries:

During the last 50 years the United States have organized bombings in Western Europe, [Greece and Turkey] that they have falsely been attributed to the left and the extreme left with the purpose of discrediting them in the eyes of their voters. This strategy is still present today, inspiring fear of Islam and justifying wars over oil. [22]

Since the beginning of 2007, bombings, assassinations, murders, foiled plots, ultimatums to the government by the armed forces, constant speculation of an imminent coup, inland and cross-border warfare with the PKK, ‘colour revolutions’ (II) style staged democracy demonstrations, high-profile police operations, new anti-terror legislation have dominated Turkish public opinion.
The detention in Istanbul [in late January] of alleged members of a shadowy Turkish ultranationalist group has revived charges that elements within the Turkish security apparatus have long tried to destabilize the country through a campaign of bombings and assassinations. These allegedly include false flag operations [III] that have been attributed to Kurdish separatists and violent Islamists [sic] . [23]

The assassination of the leftist investigative journalist and columnist Ugur Mumcu in 1993 was seen by Turkey's secular establishment, media and armed forces as an opportunity to galvanize anti-Islamic feelings in general and anti-Iranian feelings in particular. The assassination was blamed on Iran, who allegedly used the (Turkish) Hezbollah as a pawn.

In reality, the (Turkish) Sunni Hezbollah has very little in common with its namesake in Lebanon and it is an established fact that this group was created and used by Turkey's paramilitary establishment against the PKK during the 1990s. In fact, on the 15th anniversary of the assassination last month, Mumcu’s solicitor brother Ceyhan Mumcu made the following call to the public:

Let's be careful from now on and do not claim that Ugur Mumcu was murdered by Iran.

Although I've been reiterating this point frequently, unfortunately some people are still giving statements to the contrary to the press. According to my research, US took the decision to murder him in May 1992. [24]

Recently, news items on (Turkish) Hezbollah have once again started appearing in the Turkish media. There are grounds to interpret this as part of a subtle psychological operation to set Turkish public opinion against Iran.

In the last two months there has also been an increase in Al Qaeda related news reports:

The security establishment has received specific intelligence information according to which al-Qaeda cells that have infiltrated Turkey and are planning to carry out terror attacks on Israeli targets and sites affiliated with the United States… Fresh security guidelines have been relayed to Israeli government agencies and businesses operating throughout Turkey in light of the threat. [25]

These were followed by anti-terror operations throughout the country. [26] The threat was echoed by US Attorney General Michael Mukasey in the wake of his visit to Ankara this month:

We are watching Al Qaeda closely. And we have seen in the recent period that they have increased their activities in Turkey… It appeared as though Al Qaeda may have chosen Turkey as a base. [27]

Back in November 2003, researcher Michel Chossudovsky wrote that the bomb attacks on the British consulate and the HSBC bank headquarters in Istanbul coincided with President George Bush’s visit to London, which took place the day following the completion of the annual Turkish-US Joint Defense Group meeting in Williamsburg, US :

The attacks have created conditions for a more active role of Turkey in the Iraqi war theatre… The Istanbul bombings also serve to uphold the shaky legitimacy of Prime Minister Tony Blair in the face of mounting political opposition to Britain's' participation in the US led war. [28]

It looks like a similar strategy is at work in the face of another threat of war. As in the case of (Turkish) Hezbollah, it doesn’t really matter whether Al Qaeda has any connection whatsoever with Iran. This is all conflated Islamophobia and racism stoking the fire for war.

Titled PKK’s tank or Iran’s atomic bomb?’, Kadri Gursel’s article gives a perfect example of the anti-Iranian propaganda of the Turkish media:

Iran provided the PKK with shelter and logistical support in the 1990's, which was a period when Turkey had a close regional cooperation with the US; it fomented terrorism by using a wing of Hezbollah and openly supported Islamic movements through its diplomatic representatives. Murderers trained by Iran killed our intellectuals. Iran did all that to destabilize Turkey, whom it sees as a natural opponent.

Once Iran conducts its first nuclear test, it will become a super-power on the scale of the range of its missiles. Then it is expected to behave even more recklessly as it will have the ability to back its aggressive foreign policy with a shield of nuclear deterrence. [29]

It is worth bearing in mind that there has been no war between the two countries since the signing of the Qasr-e-Shirin Peace Treaty in 1639.

In a recent newspaper interview, former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel mentions another typical argument against Iran:

They keep asking me: What is happening to us? Are we becoming like Iran? Where are we heading towards? Will these individual changes eventually turn us into an Iran? That’s the concern. The nation is anxious and frightened of the prospect of a counter-revolution. [30]

In her open letter published in the Turkish daily Milliyet, Handan Haktanir, wife of Turkey’s ambassador to Tehran in 1991-94, gives a dire warning to Turkish women:

against certain regulations adopted in the name of freedom in an extremely innocent manner, but then pave the way for a much more repressive regime. According to my Iranian female friends, starting with the introduction of a compulsory wearing of hijab in schools, it took three years for this insidious and gradual process to be completed and then it was too late. [31]

The ad-nauseam debate on the wearing of head-scarves in public and the secular nature of the Turkish state seem to have an underlying motive of stoking hostility against Iran. In fact, barring some exceptions, even the religious extra-parliamentary opposition and media are at best ignoring the threat against Iran and at worst raising concern about Iran’s increasing sphere of influence in Iraq/the Middle East and its threat against Turkey’s national interests. Sunni prejudices against the predominantly Shia Iran certainly play a role too. As for the various shades of the left-wing extra-parliamentary opposition and media, exceptions apart, they don’t do much other than paying lip service to Iraq, Palestine and Guantanamo Bay.

So, what is the impact of all these manipulations of Turkish citizens? The whole society is extremely polarised along ethnic, sectarian and class identities, showing excessive intolerance and mistrust to each other, in a state of fear and confusion, largely desensitised to the ongoing wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan (let alone anywhere else) and oblivious to the approaching threat against its two other neighbours, namely Iran and Syria. In short, Operation Gladio’s age-old ‘strategy of tension’ (IV) has proved to be quite effective.

The Turkish daily Hurriyet reported Dick Cheney’s forthcoming visit with the title ‘Cheney will come for the Mullahs’:

Iran’s ‘nuclear’ threat is the reason behind the US Vice President Dick Cheney’s plans to visit Turkey … During his visit in March, Dick Cheney will be giving ‘serious’ messages on Iran… He will say: ‘Iran is a very serious threat. Help us and support us’. [32]

The Turkish daily Aksam’s columnist Nagehan Alci expresses concern about this visit:

Cheney’s last visit was in 2002 in the run up to the Iraq war to ask support from Turkish Prime Minister Ecevit for the war. He was on a big tour in the Middle East to test the mood about the war… If this visit materialises, then Cheney will be discussing the support provided by Turkish troops in Afghanistan and the situation in Iraq...

But the main issue will be Iran. Cheney might give the signal that the option of a military intervention in Iran is on the table, but will not be talking openly about these plans. Instead, he will mention the sanctions that they want to pass at the UN Security Council. He will emphasize the need to isolate Iran and warn that Iran’s nuclear power threatens Turkey as well. (He gave a similar warning [against Iraq] in 2002). [33]

In the run up to the Iraq war, there was overwhelming unity in Turkey against the war, estimated to encompass 90-95 % of Turkish citizens. A war against Iran will probably be very unpopular as well, but this time it appears that the Turkish citizens appear to be too distracted and divided to take the threat seriously until the last minute, while the parliament indulges in a conspiracy of silence. Hence this paper is an attempt to redress the information deficit and highlight especially the psychological operations being directed at Turkey to pave the way for conflict with Iran, so that the Turkish and world public perceive the danger and act in time to avert it. Circulation to all interested and concerned parties is encouraged.

(I) Operation Gladio: Originally set up as a network of clandestine cells to be activated behind the lines in the event of a Soviet invasion of Western Europe, Gladio quickly expanded into a tool for political repression and manipulation, directed by NATO and Washington. Using right-wing militias, underworld figures, government provocateurs and secret military units, Gladio not only carried out widespread terrorism, assassinations and electoral subversion in democratic states such as Italy, France and West Germany, but also bolstered fascist tyrannies in Spain and Portugal, abetted the military coup in Greece and aided Turkey's repression of the Kurds.

(II) colour revolutions: Burma’s “Saffron Revolution,” like the Ukraine “Orange Revolution” or the Georgia “Rose Revolution” and the various colour revolutions instigated in recent years against strategic states surrounding Russia, is a well-orchestrated exercise in Washington-run regime change, down to the details of “hit-and-run” protests with “swarming” mobs of Buddhists in saffron, internet blogs, mobile SMS links between protest groups, well-organized protest cells which disperse and reform.

(III) false flag operations: Covert opeartions conducted by governments, corporations, or other organizations, which are designed to appear as if they are being carried out by other entities. The name is derived from the military concept of flying false colours; that is, flying the flag of a country other than one's own. False flag operations are not limited to war and counter-insurgency operations, and have been used in peace-time; for example, during Italy’s strategy of tension.

(IV) strategy of tension: A way to control and manipulate public opinion by using fear, propaganda, disinformation, psychological warfare, agents provocateurs, as well as false flag terrorist actions. According to historian Daniele Ganser, “It is a tactic which consists in committing bombings and attributing them to others. By the term 'tension' one refers to emotional tension, to what creates a sentiment of fear. By the term 'strategy' one refers to what feeds the fear of the people towards one particular group".
