Portuguese and Belgian police

Bridget O'Donnell and her partner Jeremy Wilkins befriended Kate and Gerry McCann during their week-long holiday in Portugal

"Bridget O'Donnell ... criticised Portuguese detectives for failing to take a statement from her and her partner, and said police officers did not even recognise a photograph of Madeleine the day after the incident." - Madeleine witness describes abduction night

"A uniformed Portuguese policeman and a translator (Robert Murat)... later questioned Miss O'Donnell and her partner in their apartment.

"'The translator... sweated slightly... He was breathless...'

"They answered a few questions and gave their details, which the policeman took down on 'the back of a bit of paper', Miss McDonnell wrote. 'No notebook.'

"'Then he pointed to the photocopied picture of Madeleine on the table. Is this your daughter? he asked. Er, no, we said. That's the girl you are meant to be searching for." - Madeleine McCann witness breaks her silence

"Belgian police were told of the whereabouts of one of the victims of alleged child murderer and pedophile Marc Dutroux one year before she was found dead, a court in Belgium heard.
Throughout the Dutroux investigation and trial there have been allegations and rumours of police incompetence at best, collusion at worst..." - Police told where Dutroux victim was long before she was found dead: witness

"Marc Dutroux, the Belgian paedophile, claimed today that police officers helped him to abduct two young women whose bodies were later discovered buried in his garden. Testifying for the first time at his trial, Dutroux said that he abducted An Marchal, 17, and Eefje Lambrecks, 19, with the help of a heroin-addicted friend, who is also on trial, and two other men. 'I later found out they were members of the police force,' he told the court, without identifying them." - Dutroux claims police helped in teens' kidnap - Times Online
