The Oscar Slater case reminds us of the Lockerbie bomb case and many others.

The Oscar Slater case, in Glasgow, dates back to 1908.

Slater was wrongly convicted of murdering Miss Marion Gilchrist.

The Crown suppressed evidence which would have given slater an alibi. The lord advocate 'implied things that were not true and misstated those that were'. The Procurator Fiscal withheld evidence which pointed to another suspect: the wealthy son of a prominent Glasgow family; a relative of Marion Gilchrist.

Glasgow detective John Trench questioned Slater's guilt.

Trench was dismissed from the Glasgow police.

Trench was put on trial for the offence of reset. The evidence looked fake. There had been corrupt collusion between the Crown Office and the Glasgow police force. The jury and the lord justice clerk made sure that Trench was acquitted.

Trench died a broken man.

Slater spent 19 years in jail.

Eventually, over many years, the truth emerged.

A grocer named MacBrayne confirmed Slater's alibi, saying he had seen Slater on his own doorstep at the time.

Miss Barrowman and Miss Lambie, key witnesses, were traced. They admitted that they had been bribed to falsely identify Slater.

When all the new evidence was published in the newspapers, Slater was released from prison.

The Scottish Court of Criminal Appeal pardoned Slater on the grounds that the original judge had misdirected the jury. No compensation was given to Slater.
