Scotland has 8.3 per cent of the UK population and produces 9.2 per cent of its gross domestic product.

Oil, whisky and a huge range of manufactured goods mean an independent Scotland would be one of the world’s top exporters.

An independent Scotland could expect to start with healthier state finances than the rest of the UK.

According to David Cameron: "Supporters of independence will always be able to cite examples of small, independent and thriving economies across Europe such as Finland, Switzerland and Norway. It would be wrong to suggest that Scotland could not be another such successful, independent country.”

James Knightley, senior economist at ING bank, says that greater sway over its own economy could be a real advantage for Scotland.

Any mention of Slovakia/Czechoslovakia there? I guess not.

Article is interesting in that this seems to be the first mainstream, respected paper to comment in a positive sense on the potential independence of Scotland. I also saw the comment from Felix and got to the 90-odd page document. It took some time to go through although not as much as I thought as most of this has already been released by the Government. It does ask all the right questions - it mentions the white paper of the Scottish Government, I have a copy myself so at least I know that those questions ARE answered. The fears raised by the government are a little disingenuous as the independence of Ireland doesn't seem to cause problems at the border. This is not as good as some of the other papers they have released. I still think that there is a dearth of information to the public on this.

It would be nice to see the pound sterling reduced in status to accepted currency.

Scotland should print it own money and give every Scot £50,000 of it gratis on achieving independence.

Scotland will be the playground of American troublemakers forever or until the oil runs out, whichever comes first. You will soon have an IMF loan, an American airbase, a listening post, a fortified "embassy", and a "president" that bends over deeply to lick the Americans' boots. The plan for all of Europe is to chop it up into as many little statelets as possible under the flag of the EU, and place someone like Blair at it's head. I can't believe you Scots are unable to see through the fog of your so called nationalism to see what you're walking into.
