CHILD ABUSE BY NUNS

There have been many reports of sexual and physical abuse of children by nuns.

1. In 2009, the Sisters of Mercy offered to pay "a further €128m (£117m) to compensate for decades of abuse in its schools and orphanages."

"The compensation offer to the Irish education department is by far the largest from 18 orders of Catholic priests, brothers and nuns found guilty of chronic child abuse...

"A nine-year state investigation ruled that all the orders permitted and covered up endemic rape, molestation, beatings and mental cruelty in their children's institutions."

2. The Kollenberg orphanage in Sittard was run by German Carmelite nuns.

"Bedwetters were forced to stand absolutely still, wearing nothing but their dirty underwear over their head.

3. "At a sanatorium run by Franciscan nuns in Bunde, naughty children were put in a tub filled with ice cold water, a punishment applied in other places as well."

4. The Poor Sisters of Nazareth are nuns who have looked after children in the order's dozens of homes in Britain; and in their many homes around the world.

Claims of sexual and physical abuse by the nuns have come from around the world.

In 1997, dozens of former residents of homes in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Midlothian and Kilmarnock claimed they had suffered vicious beatings and sexual abuse.

In 1998, a report was published into allegations of abuse at one of the order's homes in Queensland, Australia, over a 90-year period.

The report told of how one girl, Helen Carter, had her legs burnt with a red-hot poker.

Vera Willshire was beaten so badly she had to stay in the infirmary for five weeks.

To hide injuries from visitors, children were put into a "black hole" without bedding, ventilation or light.

According to the report:

"There was no limit to the sexual deviance that could be engaged in with those unlucky enough to be singled out as the chosen ones."

5. The Magdalene Laundries were run by nuns.

Young girls were sent to live in these asylums which operated in several parts of the world.

Since 2001, the Irish government has acknowledged that girls in the Magdalene laundries were victims of abuse.

"Until well into the twentieth century, girls deemed to be 'difficult' – because they were sexually active, or sexually abused, or simply poor – were sent to laundries by their families or the state. Despite having committed no crime, they were not allowed to leave the institutions and were forced to work for no pay, making them literally slaves. Many women spent their entire lives there."

Depressing but not surprising: how the Magdalene Laundries got ...

I said it before and I repeat it now: singer Sinead O'Connor recalls her time spent at the Magdalene Laundries like the most terifying of her life....

IN THE 1950S I ATTENDED ST MARYS ORPHANAGE SCHOOL IN WALTHSTOW E17, RUN BY NUNS.
I SAW SOME DREADFUL SIGHTS, THE HEAD NUN WOULD TELL A BOY TO WAIT BY HER OFFICE, THEN BRING HIM IN AND PUT HER HAND DOWN HIS PANTS AND PLAY WITH IT, IF HE GOT AROUSED SHE WOULD SAY HE BELONGED TO THE DEVIL AND WAS A HORRID FILTHY BOY AND BEAT HIM.
SHE WOULD OFTEN BEAT KIDS WITH A CRICKET BAT
HOW THEY GOT AWAY WITH WHAT THEY DID I DO NOT KNOW
BUT SOME TIME LATER THE NEARBY CATHOLIC CHURCH WAS BURNT DOWN IN AN ARSON ATTACK TO THE DELIGHT OF THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE ORPHANAGE SCHOOL

I wonder what hides that, considering Nixon's gay proclivities

Sinead O'Connor was abused by her mother long before she went to the laundry. In fact she maintains that her music and writing thrived at the laundry she says that she did not suffer any physical abuse there either. She is a troubled individual that is best not used as an example.

Sinead Oconnor on one side, no one can dispute what the nuns did, they say a child is born in sin because her parents had to have sex to have her, therefore its right to bear her, this is what they told us, beating was good for us and we deserved it,
OK most of the hate for catholicism comes from jews, but much comes from ill treated people who as kids knew the hatred of nuns

Well, I am sorry to go counter current, but I attended Roman Catholic convents for 10 years as a 'day girl', (not a border).

The nuns were called FCJ which means Faithful Companions of Jesus (possibly Jesuit controlled nuns).

During my and my sisters time there, I did not hear of any single case of sexual abuse or even horrible bullying, as described in above article.

I am very sorry for all those girls who have had a bad experience with nuns but it was certainly not my own or my sisters case.

Hearing what other nuns may have got up to in other Convents is difficult to deal with for those who did not have a bad experience.

@Anon 12.50 - I know and already said it on "Child abuse by women" section from yesterday

@Anon 12.50. She is troubled, she suffered a lot of abuse, u dont expect her to be like the rest of us, dont u? Not to say the mind control she's been subjected to, coz shes in the showbiz after all. In order to "fix it" she said her time spent at the Magdalene Laundries was prolific for her future career. Truth is she went thru hell while there. Deal with it.

Seems it is only the Catholic church institutions where we here these horrible cases. Where are the main stream media stories of the abuse, children being beat, sexually assaulted and disappeared in government schools, government hospitals and in government-elite secret cult meetings?

Perhaps disproportionately highlighting the cases in the Catholic church fits in well with the anti-god, pro-state agenda of the elite whereas the other types don't.

Here's a counterpoint:

you have to remember that the jews run the news media and love anything anti catholic, the Jehovahs witnesses and especially the orthodox jews have had loads of sex scandals with kids but we dont see it, jews deal with their own crimes in secret courts run by the board of jewish deputies.
But there is something deeper here you cannot expect flesh and blood to stay celibate all their lives, they will crack, how many men serving long prison terms turn queer ? lots if you read the studies, celibacy does not affect women so deeply but one of the ways it does is to bring on depression and hatred, its the celibacy thats wrong
PS i have heard of some wonderful work by nuns and preists we must not tar them all the same

I was brought up and educated by monks, at no time was i treated harshly or badly,i have a pal the well known pete the waggon who was brought up by jesuits, he experienced no cruelty just kindness, and yet i have another freind brought up by nuns whose expereinces were very different to ours, it seems the whole spectrum of behaviour is seen here

@ANON 4:29 - DEAL WITH REALITY, SEXUAL ABUSE AND MOLESTATION HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CONNECTED TO RELIGIONS, CATHOLIC CHURCH BEING NO. 1. INTERESTING HOW JEWISH DECEIT WORKS ON BOTH SIDES. FIRST, THEY INVENT CHRISTIANITY AND ITS SCUMMY INSTITUTIONS AND THEN PRETEND THEY ATTACK THEM.

Yes, without saying that such wicked nuns and priests don't exist (clearly they do) I must declare that despite being immersed in Catholicism I never encountered them. Frankly I appreciate the education I received from the Catholics and all in a complete absence of abuse. I think it's telling that the Catholics gave me the logic and reasoning to leave the church behind. Something of a failure as a control mechanism no? Which makes it what exactly?

Otherwise I concur with the various comments above insofar as the media's concentration of the wickedness of the Catholic Church says as much about the media as it does about the church.

best etc. etc.

These abuses are horrible however best practices in child care have only been around for the last 100 years or so. Also, who would've thought that churches and other institutions would be the spawning ground for these unforgivable crimes against children. Yet again, the voices of children suffering these abuses is never heard. Its one sided blah, blah, blah coming from abused adults. Let's have a true discussion about the impact of sexual degradation and abuse on young lives. You need only go to America's prison system to find broken spirits who can never be made whole again.
