THE INTERNET AND BIG CORPORATIONS

The internet - A 'walled world' under constant surveillance?

Lee Rainie and Barry Wellman have written: "The Individual in a Networked World: Two Scenarios".

A future scenario is this:

1. Your computer will only let you see what the big corporations want you to see.

2. Everything will have adverts, designed according to the data collected on you by the big corporations.

Before you can read an e-mail, there may be a 30 second advert that you have to watch.

The adverts will use up a lot of bandwidth.

3. The material that you put onto the internet, blog entries videos and photos, will be the property of the big corporations.

Try StartPage, which, they say, gives web results from Google but "does NOT collect or share ANY personal information!.

They also have a proxy server which should mean that "no IP address [is] recorded, [and] no identifying cookies [are] used, no search or browsing activity [is] stored.
