Sir Stephen Lander and the Serious Organised Crime Agency


The UK has its own FBI. It is called SOCA, the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

Soca is headed by Sir Stephen Lander, who was the boss of MI5 from 1996 to 2002.

The Guardian reports that, between 2003-04 and 2005-06, cocaine seizures dropped from 20,727kg to 5,798kg, cannabis from 57,617kg to 41,611kg, heroin from 1,626kg to 1,057kg.

Dominic Lawson, Con Coughlin and MI6


David Leigh wrote about 'Britain’s security services and journalists: the secret story' in the British Journalism ReviewVol. 11, No. 2, 2000, pages 21-26. http://www.bjr.org.uk/data/2000/no2_leigh.htm

According to Leigh: "British journalists – and British journals – are being manipulated by the secret intelligence agencies."

Leigh gave us an example from 1995 when the Sunday Telegraph published a story about the son of Col Gadafy of Libya and his alleged connection to a currency counterfeiting plan.

According to Leigh: "The story was written by Con Coughlin, the paper’s then chief foreign correspondent, and it was falsely attributed to a 'British banking official'. In fact, it had been given to him by officers of MI6, who, it transpired, had been supplying Coughlin with material for years."

According to leigh, former spy Richard Tomlinson heard that "within MI6 there was a 'national newspaper editor' who was used as an agent, and had received up to £100,000 in covert payments, accessed at an offshore bank, via a false passport obligingly supplied by MI6 itself."

Dominic Lawson, then editor of the Sunday Telegraph, denied that he was a spy.

What The Trap left out


'The Trap: What Happened To Our Dream Of Freedom' is a three part BBC documentary by Adam Curtis.

Curtis suggests that from the Cold War onwards, our governments have been reducing our freedoms. Curtis suggests that our governments view us in 'simplistic, computerised terms'.

The third episode of 'The Trap' is entitled 'We Will Force You To Be Free'.

This episode began with political philosopher Isaiah Berlin.

Berlin, in his essay Two Concepts Of Liberty, referred to "positive" and "negative" freedom.

"Positive freedom" is sometimes favoured by revolutionaries and tyrants who think they know what is good for us.

"Negative freedom" is favoured by Neo Conservatives, the people who reportedly want to bring American-style democracy to Iraq.

Curtis believes that the Neo Conservatives have produced a trap: they have made us think we are free whereas in reality our freedom is very much restricted.

Curtis ended the programme by suggesting that the revolutions that bring "positive freedom" do not necessarily have to involve violence.

Curtis talked a lot about violence.

He told us that the Americans used violence to try topple the democratically elected government of Nicaragua. He told us that the Americans toppled Marcos and brought in a regime that left the corrupt elite in power.

What Curtis failed to tell us about was Operation Gladio.

Lower the school leaving age; shorten the school day

If we lower the school leaving age and shorten the school day, children will learn more. That is the paradox.

In the United Kingdom, the state school system has failed.
We know some British teenagers who do not know the name of the capital city of their own country. They can barely read and write. Yet they are of average intelligence.

British state schools are bad and getting worse. Many should be closed down.
A re-think of education is required.

All schools should be run privately by non-profit making trusts.
All schools should be small.

The school day should be about 3 hours.

The school leaving age should be around 12.

Much more use should be made of apprenticeships, learning by computer, and 'special' schools.
BBC 1 television should show educational programmes only.

Mothers of young children should stay at home and not go out to work.

According to an article in the Daily Mail, 1 June 2006, more than half of school leavers have problems with the basics:

And the inability of pupils to get good grades comes despite widespread suspicions that exams have been dumbed down in recent years...

Forty-two per cent of pupils finished 11 years of compulsory education without achieving at least a grade C in GCSE English which means they struggle to read and summarise information accurately or use basic grammar...

Forty-eight per cent - or 301,671 - failed to reach the same standard in GCSE maths meaning they are unable to calculate the area of a room.

A total of 54 per cent - nearly 350,000 - fail to achieve the expected level in both English and maths.

The official exams watchdog, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), says pupils need to meet grade C standard - so-called "level two" - to function as citizens...

Just 46 per cent leave school able to read, write and add up properly.

A three hour school day; a school leaving age of 12

The 1819 Factory Act in the UK limited the working day for children in cotton mills.

What we need now is a Schools Act limiting the school day to three hours.

I would suggest that school hours could be 9 am to 12 noon.

Very few children can concentrate on school work for more than 3 hours per day.

When children are not at school they can enjoy being children.

Interests will vary:

1. Children can work at home or in libraries on interesting homework projects. It would help if every child was given a computer.

2. They can join clubs involved in everything from sport to music to carpentry to journalism ....

3. They can become apprentices in safe and interesting occupations.

4. They can explore their world.
Mothers of younger children will be able to spend more time with their offspring.

According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, November 2, 2002:
"Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia -the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was the head of the counter-terrorism unit with the army's special forces."
The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, Indonesia's spy chief.
Allegedly, Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al Faruq played a part in the Bali bomb plot. Al Faruq was arrested in Bogor on June 5, 2002 and handed over to US authorities. Al Faruq was able to escape from custody.
Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang was quoted by Tempo as saying that Al-Faruq was a CIA-recruited agent.
The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up. This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons.

In 'The politics of animal cooperation' Thomas Jay Oord (June 1, 2003) wrote:

In contemporary science, biologist Alan Dugatkin’s work in animal cooperation validates Kropotkin’s words. Dugatkin’s book Cooperation Among Animals: An Evolutionary Perspective offers numerous examples of friendship among nonhumans.

The social activities of birds, for instance, illustrate the great degree of cooperation found in the nonhuman world. Birds regularly hunt together and provide information to one another about where food can be found. In addition, many species of birds provide warnings about predators, thereby establishing a means by which they can survive and thrive through cooperation. In fact, many other animal species both hunt cooperatively and work together to warn others as to the whereabouts of predators.

Perhaps the clearest example of friendship among animals is the mutual grooming that occurs in many species. As early as the 1930s, primatologists documented the mutual benefits that grooming affords nonhuman primates. Recent studies have shown that primates enjoy numerous benefits from cooperative grooming. The practice removes parasites, reduces emotional tension, fosters relational bonds, and can be a commodity to exchange for other benefits.

After surveying the research related to cooperation in fish, birds, insects, and mammals, Dugatkin concludes that, “while not ubiquitous, cooperation is certainly widespread in the animal kingdom and sooner or later we will . . . come up with a solid fundamental understanding of the evolution of cooperation.”

Of course, the best examples of friendship-love available to science come from the friendships among human primates. The scientific disciplines of sociology, psychology, and anthropology provide rich data from which to articulate theories of philia. Of course, human cooperative friendship is often much richer and more complex than nonhuman cooperation, because humans possess superior capacities for language, rationality, consciousness and long-term planning. From an article by Harvey Thompson at WSWS 16 November 1999:

A typical case is that of Harry Farr, who joined the British Expeditionary Force in 1914 and fought in the trenches. His position was repeatedly shelled, and in May 1915 he collapsed with strong convulsions. In hospital, his wife Gertrude—who was denied a widow's pension after the war—recalled, “he shook all the time. He couldn't stand the noise of the guns. We got a letter from him, but it was in a stranger's handwriting. He could write perfectly well, but couldn't hold the pen because his hand was shaking.”

It is now thought that Farr was possibly suffering from hypacusis, which occurs when the eardrums are so damaged that the auditory nerve becomes exposed, making loud noises physically unbearable. Despite this, Farr was sent back to the front and fought at the Somme. After several months of fighting, he requested to see a medical orderly but was refused. In Farr's Court Martial papers, the Sergeant Major is quoted as saying “If you don't go up to the f*****g front, I'm going to f*****g blow your brains out” to which Farr simply replied “I just can't go on.”

The Court Martial was over in 20 minutes. Harry Farr had to defend himself. General Haig signed his death warrant and he was shot at dawn on October 16, 1916.

Those soldiers in the firing squad ordered to carry out the execution were often tormented by the experience for the rest of their lives. John Laister, who died two months ago at the age of 101, recalled how he and a number of others were marched into the woods and told they were to be part of a firing squad. Speaking on the BBC television's programme Everyman (screened last Sunday evening), Laister said he was still haunted by the moment that he looked in the direction the rifles were pointed and saw a mere boy stood with his back to a tree. “There were tears in his eyes and tears in mine.”

The Blair government is resisting appeals for a “Millennium Pardon” for the 306 men.
