Official figures show 1.65 million people unemployed in Britain.

But, 7.9 million are "economically inactive".

So, nearly 10 million adults in Britain are out of work, one in four of the working population.

Just over two million are on long-term sickness benefits.

200,000 are on temporary sick leave.

2.3 million stay at home to look after children or care for a sick or elderly relatives.

Around 1.9 million are students.

620,000 have taken early retirement.

35,000 are 'discouraged workers' - people who have stopped looking for work because they do not think they will find a job.

800,000 people are economically inactive for other reasons.
